TAMPA
BAY (MAY 13, 2019) – Buccaneers Quarterback Jameis Winston hosted 16 freshmen
and sophomores from The Skills Center in Tampa on a tour of TECO’S Data Center
on Friday afternoon as a way of introducing a larger number of youth to a
variety of careers in STEM fields. Winston met the students at Hillsborough
High School, where they were transported by bus after school to the facility.
|
On the tour, the students were able to meet TECO
employees and learn about all of the technology and human skills that go into
generating enough energy to power an entire city. They also participated in a mock
“hacking” incident and learned about encryption. Students learned the importance
of keeping computer systems up to date with security patches. Winston even
participated alongside the students as they were taught about the components of
a computer. The event also provided Winston with an opportunity to address the
students on the importance of setting goals and focusing on education.
|
Many Title I schools in Tampa Bay do not have the
resources to provide students with access to updated technology, which only
expands the digital divide that has become more prevalent in urban communities.
Winston organized this field trip to help expose these students to some of the
most advanced, cutting-edge technological and scientific equipment available.
|
The mission of Winston’s Dream Forever Foundation is
focused around creating educational resources for underprivileged youth,
specifically opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics. The Cyber Security Center tour serves as an extension of what the
foundation has already been doing in the community.
|
Winston’s signature community outreach program,
Jameis’ Dream Rooms, installs state-of-the-art technology centers within Title
I elementary schools. These Winston-branded Dream Rooms house iPads, Mac
computers, robotics equipment, 3D printers, projectors, and other digital
learning applications. The inaugural Dream Room was unveiled within in
Alexander Elementary in 2018.
|
The Dream Forever Foundation’s education-focused
outreach aspires to open doors for underprivileged students to exciting,
life-changing careers in STEM fields, thus ending the cycle of poverty in their
lives.
