Students at Alexander Elementary School in Tampa
started Tuesday off on an exciting note as Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback
Jameis Winston participated in a school-wide high-five line to begin the
special day for Jameis and his Dream Forever Foundation. Jameis was at
Alexander Elementary School for a special reason and that was to launch his
first “Dream Room.”
Jameis Winston’s Dream Room, a community outreach
program of Jameis Winston’s Dream Forever Foundation, transformed a classroom
at Alexander Elementary School into a new state-of-the art technology center to
expand personal learning opportunities and provide career exploration for its
students. Designed with Tampa Bay Buccaneers colors and branded with images of
Jameis playing football on the wall, the Dream Room is also filled with iPads
loaded with educational applications, tower computer stations, furniture, LEGO robots, a 3D printer, a projector and a TV with Apple TV.
The Dream Room is a space designed for students
to dream, learn and grow as the use of technology in the classroom has many
positive benefits such as motivating students to learn, preparing students for
the digital future and increasing collaboration between students.
After Jameis and students from Alexander
Elementary School officially unveiled the Dream Room with a red ribbon cutting,
Jameis spoke to students about the significance of the Dream Room and why it is
important for him to bring this Dream Room filled with technology to Alexander
Elementary. For Jameis, just as it takes collaboration, team building skills
and communication to have success on the football field, the use of advanced technology
that the Dream Room provides will also help these students to develop those
important life skills.
“Growing up I felt like I lacked certain
opportunities that other kids were afforded so I wanted to give these children
the same opportunities every child should be given regardless of their economic
status. I want to level the playing field for them so they can succeed,” said
Winston.
While other schools in the School District of
Hillsborough County have access to technology, Alexander Elementary School did
not have access to technology prior to Jameis Winston’s Dream Room being
launched in the school.
Many students at Alexander Elementary School,
especially those students from Puerto Rico who came to Alexander Elementary
School after the devastation of Hurricane Maria, do not have access to a
computer, tablet or mobile device at home to complete their homework. Thanks to
Jameis’ Dream Room, the room will be open before school, during school hours and
after school for students to use the advanced technology to help complete their
homework and to expand their learning.
From now on when students at Alexander Elementary
School enter Jameis Winston’s Dream Room, the students will remember the
importance of how Jameis and the Dream Room are providing opportunities and
resources to achieve their dreams both in the classroom and in life.
